The Phoenix Scorpions Field Hockey Club hosted their 6th annual Cactus Classic Field Hockey tournament in Phoenix, AZ. Overall, 44 teams from across the US, Canada and Mexico participated in the two day event held on January 30 and 31. The tournament provided the opportunity for teams in the Men’s, Women’s, Mixed, Under-16 and under-13 divisions to vie for the top spot within their division. Of the 12 teams within the Men’s division, Surry Lions Green, from British Colombia, Canada came on top beating Freemont 2-1. As a special mention, Mexico’s Under-18 Men’s national team showed a strong performance despite their delay getting to Phoenix. In the Women’s division, of the 7 teams, the Mulligans beat ASU Desert Divas, 1-0 to clench the title. The Mixed division had the strongest showing with 16 teams competing for first place. After an exciting match between Brooklyn and Houston, TX, Houston, came out as the winner 4-3. Within the Under-16 division, the final match was between Sacramento and Moorpark Coyotes, with Sacramento defeating the Coyotes 4-0. And finally, in the Under-13 division, Sacramento again managed to clench the first spot beating the Phoenix Tigers 5-1.
In addition to the exciting competition, the Scorpions hosted a lavish banquet on Saturday night, which allowed all the teams and participants to celebrate the event in an informal way by enjoying a delectable buffet, music and dancing. When asked about the tournament, Phoenix Scorpions club President Waljeet Hundal said, “This was an exciting year for us since it was the first time we were using the new city of Phoenix Reach 11 Sports Complex. It turned out to be a huge success, not only for the teams participating in the event, but also for the club and the city of Phoenix. Within the field hockey community in the US and Canada, the success of our tournament has put Phoenix on the “must visit” map for many teams.” Hundal also added, “The primary focus of our club is to promote and grow the sport of field hockey in Phoenix and Arizona. In addition to various youth programs we offer young players, this tournament is one of our best means of fostering this growth. However, hosting such a large event is only possible through the hard work, dedication and support of the club members and community. Without their direct involvement, we would never be able to host such an event.” |
